Envisioned with utility, simplicity and economy of materials, Iopio Stencil is a symbolic and practical exercise in design streamlining and  dematerialisation.
---

Having made an earlier prototype with V1, I refined the design into what you see here.

This idea was a personal response to the energy hungry and over-complexity of many of our industrialised products and processes.

With population growth and dwindling resources, anticipating our needs for continual sophistication and communication whilst doing more with less can’t be a bad thing.

Designed for mainly large scale use, the Iopio Stencil grid potentially contains all the basic structural information system for all alphabetic glyphs. A key unique feature is that design has the built in capability to allow the user to create extremely controlled, sophisticated and consistent kerning within stencilled text absent from other stencil systems.

This kerning can be created using the proportions within the stencil itself for spacing.

This same kerning concept has been utilised numerically and applied to the very font you are now reading; developed in Fontlab, generated as an otf and finally uploaded onto this website.

This means that in theory novices to typographers alike, any end user can create reams of professionally spaced stencilled text using this one stencil system to any scale.

In fact the bigger the required text, the greater the efficiency of the system with it’s economy of scale.

(Available as otf. file and looking to sell in future).

Unfortunately the stencil prototypes above have been lost in Australia somewhere so I will be redoing and creating some more prototypes in the coming future.
