Experiments in cardboard.

Been long time coming. Making Iopio light prototypes with found cardboard and electroluminescent wire (EW); favourites and eco materials. This system could have potential future uses for lightweight and cost effective art / design installations.

Two and three dimensions were built, effectiveness and typeface were assessed.

For example: Could carry in flight baggage; or source when I arrive... and replicate on an Indian beach? Using a pencil, knife, ruler and basic printed template.

Scarcity and cost of materials play an interesting part in this conversation.

The stacked cardboard idea could only hold so much weight when including the wire’s battery pack. Connecting side-by-side was preferable. (You can see the prototype buckling in the images).

Using 1 x metre lengths of wire for individual characters was more efficient than using 5 x metres for 5 x characters: long wires malfunctioned when bent / twisted too much.

Use the grain of the cardboard correctly.

Making connector sections
held individual characters together = best use of different template sizes and shapes of available cardboard.

These connectors an also act as a potential space between words and build freestanding / double-sided 3D structures.
